I'm not sure if this is the same as everywhere but here in San Francisco Comcast has the complete control over cable television. In fact they are the only ones who can put in new cable lines underground so its pretty much a done deal. We have been trying to get off their bandwagon for some years but there is no other option. After calling everyone and having no luck, I found Astound Cable and Internet. Available in SF and possibly saving us $100 a month, OMG, sign me up, draw my blood. Not so fast, of course they are not available in our house, great. Stuck with Comcast and no way to save money I decided just to ditch cable all together.
Armed with enough moxy to tell the Comcast customer service that our relationship was done I called to make the break up official. Secretly, I had already purchased the elgato EYETV Hybrid tuner for my Mac mini and was poised to create an entertainment center around it. It was debated weather the dictator would be able to shut off basic cable while still delivering Internet service. When I finally got on the line with the dictator's henchmen I was taken aback by the great service I was receiving. Almost blindly I wildly attacked with mis-guided and directed questions and poor math. It was almost too crazy to believe. In the end I walked away with faster Internet and basic cable for the same price I was looking for, saving almost $100 a month. Wow.
Now I’ve got my PVR hooked into my computer and any show I save can be watched on my iphone and our savings this year should allow us to go (with Charlie) to France to see the Tharingers.
